Abundant in mountain canyons, foothills, ridge tops, and upland slopes from sea level to 9,000 feet, the evergreen canyon live oak is the most widely distributed oak in California. The saucer-shaped cups of its distinctive acorns are covered in a felt of fine golden hairs, giving this oak the scientific name chrysolepis, meaning “golden scale.”
