Image 8.5” x 13” / Matted 14” x 19.5”

Endemic to California, the blue oak grows on hot, dry sites in the foothills surrounding California's Central Valley. At lower elevations blue oaks are scattered across large expanses of grassland. The bulbous galls, produced in response to chemicals secreted by the larva of a tiny wasp, provide protection and nourishment for the developing insect.
