First described by John C. Fremont after his crossing of the Sierra Nevada in the winter of 1884, the interior live oak, reaching heights of 75 feet, can live to be more than 200 years old. These broad, densely-branched, evergreen oaks occupy a large range on upland slopes in the California foothills below 5,000 feet and across inland valleys.
